The Grand Canyon men's basketball team continues a stretch of five home games, hosting San Diego State at GCU Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted live in the Phoenix area on CW6 and streamed online at
GCU.tv. Barry Buetel will be providing play-by-play with analyst Scott Williams and Kate Longworth on the sideline.The contest will
also be televised in the San Diego area.
GCU fans can listen live on the radio as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on Fox Sports 910 or on the iHeart Radio App. The pregame show will start 15 minutes before tip and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
- GCU hosts San Diego State for the first time in school history, after two previous trips to San Diego.
- The Lopes dropped their second-straight game last Saturday, falling to No. 14 Louisville 79-70 in front of a GCU record attendance of 7,493.
- After opening the season with four games on the road, the Lopes have played three games at home. Six of their next seven games will be at home, with their lone road contest coming on Dec. 14 at Arizona in Tucson.
- In last season's win at San Diego State, Keonta Vernon recorded his second double-double of the season, leading the Lopes with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
- DeWayne Russell was named the WAC Player of the week for the second time in three weeks after averaging 34.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists against SIUE and Louisville.
- Russell's 42 points vs. Louisville is tied for the most points scored by an individual this season, and were the second-most points scored against Louisville in their program's history.
- With one more game to play to be eligible for conference rankings, DeWayne Russell is averaging 27.8 points per game, which would rank him second in the country and first in the WAC.
- Gerard Martin is the WAC steals leader, averaging 2.1 per game. Darion Clark ranks second in the WAC in rebounding, averaging 7.4 per game. Shaq Carr ranks second in assists with 4.1 per game.
- Grand Canyon is 6-7 all-time against teams in the Mountain West Conference.
- San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher is in his 18th season with the Aztecs and 26th season as a collegiate head coach, compiling a 551-277 career record. Fisher has led the Aztec to 11 straight postseason appearances, and a Mountain West-high 10 conference titles during that time.
- Jeremy Hemsley leads the Aztecs in scoring on the season, averaging 16.5 points per game. Zylan Cheatham is has a team-high 31 rebounds, 5.2 boards per game. Cheatham, a Phoenix native and South Mountain HS graduate, grabbed a career-high 11 boards the last time these two teams met last season.
