The Grand Canyon men's basketball team will travel to Tucson, Ariz. in a marquee matchup against Arizona on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted live in the Phoenix area on ESPNU or streamed online on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN App.
GCU fans can listen live on the radio as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on KFYI 2 1230 AM or on the iHeart Radio App. The pregame show will start 15 minutes before tip and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
- Grand Canyon and Arizona will meet for the fifth time in school history and first time since December 1980.
- The Lopes face their third AP Top-25 team of the season and fifth in school history. GCU is currently 0-4 all-time against teams ranked in the Top-25.
- Keonta Vernon recorded his second double-double of the season and fifth of his career with 15 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday's win over UIC.
- After opening the season with four games on the road, the Lopes have played five straight games at home. Following Wednesday's road contest, the Lopes will return home for four more home games.
- Freshman Oscar Frayer has scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the second time this season. His 19 points vs. San Diego State are a season-high.
- DeWayne Russell was named the WAC Player of the week last week for the second time in three weeks after averaging 34.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists against SIUE and Louisville.
- Russell's 42 points vs. Louisville is tied for the most points scored by an individual this season, and were the second-most points scored against Louisville in their program's history.
- Russell is averaging 25.4 ppg, ranking second in NCAA behind Central Michigan's Marcus Keene (30.8). He also ranks fifth in the country in minutes played, averaging 37.6 mpg.
- Gerard Martin is the WAC steals leader, averaging 1.9 per game. Darion Clark ranks fourth in the in rebounding (7.0), and Russell ranks second in assists (5.6).
- Fiifi Aidoo and Arizona freshman Lauri Markkanen were teammates at HBA-Marsky in Helsinki, Finland, under former Atlanta Hawk and Utah Ute, Hanno Mottola. Both were members of the Finland U20 national team.
- Markkanen leads the Wildcats in scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.1) and is second on the team in blocks (7).
- Arizona head coach Sean Miller is in his eighth season with the Wildcats and 13th season as a collegiate head coach. Miller has compiled a 426-316 career record and has been a part of 15 NCAA Tournament teams as a player, assistant coach and head coach, including nine in his 12-year head coaching career.
- Miller has guided teams to six Sweet 16s and four Elite Eights, and owns a 17-9 (.654) record as a head coach in the NCAA Tournament.
