After a 11-day road trip to start the season, the Grand Canyon men's basketball returns to GCU Arena to face Coppin State in their 2016-17 home-opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST and will be broadcasted live in the Phoenix area on CW6. Barry Buetel will be providing play-by-play with analyst Scott Williams and Kate Longworth on the sideline.
GCU fans can listen live as Michael Potter and Tom Kuyper will be airing on KFYI 2 1230 AM or on the iHeart Radio App. Pregame show will start 15 minutes before tip and conclude with a postgame show featuring comments from head coach
Dan Majerle.
- GCU will be hosting its home-opener at GCU Arena, where the Lopes went 18-2 in 2015-16, tied for the second most wins in NCAA Division I play.
- The Lopes are 3-0 in home openers under Dan Majerle. GCU took down Portland State 82-72 in the 2015-16 opener in front of 7,249, the fourth-largest crowd ever at GCU Arena.
- GCU aims to win its third game in a row. The Lopes had winning streaks of at least three games, four times last season.
- The Lopes are the only WAC team yet to play a home game.
- GCU has a five-game winning streak at Grand Canyon University Arena, dating back to last season.
- DeWayne Russell was named the WAC Player of the Week after averaging 26.5 point, 8.5 assists, and 3.5 rebounds over two games last week, including a career-high 30 points vs. Albany on Nov. 19.
- Darion Clark rankes second in the WAC in rebounding, averaging 8.5 per game. Shaq Carr leads the WAC in assists with 4.75 per game. Joshua Braun ranks third in scoring (18.3) and 3-point FG percentage (.483) and ranks first in minutes played (36.0).
- Braun recorded his 20th 20-point game of his career with 25 points vs. Marist on Sunday night.
- Braun scored his 1,000th career point on a layup in the first half against Albany on Nov. 19. He has 1,014 career points and is the first 1,000-point scorer in the Division I era for the Lopes.
- Coppin State is the seventh MEAC team GCU has faced in school history. The Lopes are 6-1 against the MEAC.
- Coppin State will conclude a seven-game road trip to start the season. The Eagles dropped to 0-6 on the season after falling to Ball State 79-77 in the Main Event of the MGM Tournament in Las Vegas on Monday.
- Head coach Michael Grant (17-49) is in his third season at Coppin State, and 18th season as head coach at the collegiate level.
- Coppin State returns seven players who competed last season, including three of the team's five starters – Terry Harris Jr., Keith Shivers and Blake Simpson. Joseph Treadwell currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.0 points per game.
