Russell named WAC Player of the Week

DENVER – Grand Canyon redshirt senior guard DeWayne Russell has been named Western Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 14-20. This is his first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor.
The Peoria, Ariz., native averaged 26.5 points, 8.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game over two games last week. He shot 54.1 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from three-point range and 72.7 percent from the free throw line on the week and had a 4.25 assist/turnover ratio.
Russell made his season debut against Albany and set a career high with 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting while handing out 10 assists, his sixth career double-digit assist effort. He followed it up with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor and dished out seven more assists in a win over Marist on Sunday as the Lopes won the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Springfield Bracket championship.
Other nominees included: Jaylin Airington of CSU Bakersfield averaged 24.5 points and 4.5 rebounds as the Roadrunners went 1-1 last week ... Chicago State's Fred Sims Jr. averaged 21.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals over two games last week ... Martez Harrison of UMKC averaged 20.3 points on 57.1 percent shooting, 3.67 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals as the Roos went 3-0 on the week ... NM State's Sidy N'Dir averaged 16.7 points and 2.3 rebounds as the Aggies went 2-1 on the week ... UT Rio Grande Valley's Nick Dawson averaged 17.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 2.0 assists per game last week ... Isaac Neilson of Utah Valley averaged 13.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in a pair of wins last week.
