OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team kept the pressure on Utah Valley all night but UVU held off each GCU push as the Wolverines claimed a 25-22, 25-19, 25-22 Western Athletic Conference victory on Thursday night.
GCU was tied late in both the first and third sets at UVU, but could not produce the final key points in Orem.
Randahl Powers led the Lopes with 15 kills and hit at a .370 clip.
Leigh Stonerook added 10 kills while
Jordyn Sanchez finished with nine kills and six digs.
Chloe Jenkins had a team-high 14 digs.
Heidi Carpenter finished with 38 assists and three of GCU's six aces on the night.
Hannah Hicks led GCU with three blocks.
In the first set, GCU spotted UVU the first three points before
Maria Adams got the Lopes on the board. The Lopes would take a 6-5 lead after a Sanchez kill and UVU attack error. With the scored tied up at 14-14, Sanchez sent down her fourth kill of the set, giving the Lopes a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. With the Lopes leading 19-17, UVU rallied to tie it at 19-19 but Sanchez came through to push GCU back on top 20-19. UVU would score the next three points to force GCU to take the first timeout of the set down two. A Stonerook kill and UVU error tied the set up at 22-22 but the Wolverines pulled out the 25-22 win.
GCU fell behind 7-3 in the second set but pulled within 8-7 after a UVU attack error. The Wolverines scored seven of the next eight points to lead 15-8. GCU cut a nine point deficit down to four at 23-19, but ran out of room as UVU claimed set two 25-19.
In the third set, GCU led 7-3 after a pair of UVU errors. The Lopes led 15-13 at the media timeout after a Powers kill. A Carpenter ace pushed GCU ahead 18-17 before UVU scored three straight to lead 20-18. The Lopes got two quick kills by Stonerook and Powers to tie it up at 20-20. A late ace by Jenkins retied the set at 22-22 but UVU escaped with the 25-22 win.
GCU is back in action on Saturday when it takes on the Redhawks in Seattle in the WAC regular season finale for both squads.
