GCU crowns three champions at the Beach Tennis Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The GCU women's tennis team put together a strong showing in both singles and doubles play at the Beach Tennis Tournament hosted by Long Beach State. Leading the way for GCU were Tatum Prudhomme and Susan Baklini as the pair won the first flight of the doubles bracket. Teammates Lana Rinaldi and Emilia Occhipinti won the second flight of doubles play and freshman Celina Buhr won the championship in the fourth singles flight.

"I'm very happy with our players' efforts and attitudes," head coach Greg Prudhomme stated. "They all competed at a high level, which helped everyone improve another level, but also earned us some great results. For Tatum and Susie to get to their third straight doubles final and to win this one was great to see. Equally exciting for the program is Lana and Emilia's second doubles title in two weeks and Celina's singles win in her first event as a Lope."

11811 Prudhomme and Baklini won four straight matches in doubles play en route to the championship. In the final match on Sunday, the pair defeated Helgo and Gerard of Long Beach by a score of 6-1 to win the title. In individual play, Pruhomme won two singles matches in the first flight and Baklini won one singles match in the second flight.

Partners Rinaldi and Occhipinti were equally as impressive in the second doubles flight. The pair swept through the bracket and defeated Regehr and Garcia of San Diego by a score of 6-4 in the finals.

Buhr won the first tournament of her collegiate career in the fourth singles flight. On Sunday, she battled to a three-set victory over Natalia Munoz of Long Beach by scores of 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Buhr went 4-0 in singles play over the weekend to take the title.

The Lopes will be back in action in two weeks as they travel to San Diego, Calif. for the ITA Southwest Regionals. Play will last four days, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 20 and ending on Monday, Oct. 24.
