PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell to the New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday after a close, three-set match with scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-21.
Randahl Powers and
Katrice Pond led the Lopes with eight kills each.
Heidi Carpenter tallied 26 of the team's 27 total assists while
Chloe Jenkins led with five digs.
Emily Christensen added eight kills and a team-high five blocks.
The Lopes did a great job of spreading the ball around as four different Lopes had at least 13 attacks in the match.
In a consistent, back and forth battle between the Aggies and the Lopes in the first set of the day, the Lopes let go at the very end to fall 26-24. The two teams managed to stay within three points of each other for the entire set, with the Aggies outhitting the Lopes .231-.115. With five assists by Carpenter and three digs each by
Jordyn Sanchez and Jenkins, the Lopes played the entire court despite the two-point loss.
The Lopes played catch-up for the first 10 points of the second set before another high-energy, back and forth battle. After scoring four consecutive points, the Aggies squeaked ahead for the 25-20 victory. The Lopes showed off their powerhouse moves with 27 total attacks despite being outhit by the Aggies .357-.296.
After getting off to a slow start in the third set, the Lopes ultimately fell 25-21. The Lopes closed in on the Aggies' early lead to come within one point, trailing 17-16. GCU continued to put up a good fight, but couldn't slow down their opponents to steal the win. Powers and Pond stood out in this set with a combined seven kills.
GCU drops to 4-11, 0-3 WAC while NM State improves to 13-4, 4-0 WAC.
The Lopes hit the road for their next match on Thursday, October 6 at 7 p.m. in Chicago, Ill. as they take on the Chicago State Cougars.
