PHOENIX -- The Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to extend their winning streak to 12 games and improve to 6-0 in WAC play as they host CSU Bakersfield on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m. MT from Grand Canyon University Arena.
GCU and CSUB have a long history on the basketball court. Thursday night's game will be the 34th meeting all-time between the two schools with the Roadrunners holding a 19-14 advantage in the series including their days at Division II. Since the Lopes transitioned to Division I and joined CSUB in the WAC, the Lopes have won all four meetings over the last two seasons.
Joshua Braun leads the scoring attack for the Lopes, averaging 17.8 points per game. Braun's 31-points against UMKC marked the second time in three games that he's scored 30-plus, having never done it prior. Braun has dominated in conference play, currently averaging 25.4 points and 8.0 rebounds against WAC opponents. In Saturday's win over UMKC, Braun recorded his second-straight double-double bringing his total to four on the season. Braun shot 8-of-15 from the field and tied his career-high with six three-pointers as GCU held off the Roos 85-79.
The Lopes' 11-game win streak has come with several notable accolades. For the first time in school history, GCU received a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 rankings. The Lopes also hold the second-best winning percentage in the NCAA and have the third-longest winning streak in all of Division I men's college basketball. Head coach Dan Majerle also posted his 50th career win and continues to push the standard even higher with every victory to date,
"These guys, they just keep, they amaze me they really do," Majerle said. "Every time I think they're going to kind of take a little bit of rest, they just keep fighting. We've got great chemistry on this team and the guys really care about each other. We're starting to gel, we're starting to play better and that's what I've always said, as long as they keep playing better, getting better every game we're going to be OK and I thought we got a little bit better."
CSUB enters Thursday night's contest fresh off a heart-breaking loss in double overtime to New Mexico State in front of a sold out crowd at home. The loss ended the Roadrunners' six-game win streak and their 11-game home win streak dating back to the 2014-15 season. In Saturday's loss, Jaylin Arlington led the Roadrunners in scoring with 16 points. Aly Ahmed currently leads the team in scoring on the season, averaging 14.7 points per game, while CSUB continues to lead the WAC in scoring defense, holding opponents to 61.2 points per game.
"We face a really good Bakersfield team that's won three games on road, so they're playing really well," Majerle added. "Very talented seniors who are big and have been around, so they know how to play and have had a fantastic season. So, we're going to have to get ready for that."
Following Thursday's contest, the Lopes will host Seattle University on Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
