PHOENIX - Seven individuals from the Grand Canyon baseball team received 2016 Madness WAC Preseason All-Conference recognition on Wednesday, as selected by College Sports Madness. The preseason honors were headlined by
Paul Panaccione, who was named the Field Player of the Year, and Andy Stankiewicz, who was named the Coach of the Year.
Paul Panaccione (IF),
Ben Mauseth (IF),
Garrison Schwartz (OF) and
Brandon Smith (OF) all landed on the first-team preseason all-conference.
Mick Vorhof (P) and
Thomas Lerouge (OF) were both named to the second team all-conference.
Paul Panaccione ended last season with a .376 batting average, good for a top-25 finish in the Division I leaderboards. He led the WAC in runs scored (56) and placed second in hits (83). Panaccione was named to the WAC's first team all-conference at shortstop last season.
Along with Panaccione,
Ben Mauseth was also a first team all-WAC selection in the infield. In addition to anchoring the hot corner at third base for GCU's defense, Mauseth proved key for the Lopes in the stretch run, hitting two home runs in the final weekend to help clinch the WAC regular season title.
Garrison Schwartzis the reigning WAC Freshman of the Year, finishing just two places behind Panaccione in the conference batting average race. Schwartz's .357 was sixth in the WAC and also finished in the top 10 with 40 RBIs. Among freshmen, Schwartz finished third in the nation in batting average.
Fellow outfielder
Brandon Smith was another top-10 batting average finisher in the conference at .348. Smith was also among the leaders in the conference in RBIs per game (0.88) and stolen bases per game (0.23).
Mick Vorhof was a late-inning specialist for Grand Canyon on the mound, finishing 14 games for the Lopes. Vorhof posted a 3.02 ERA to go along with five saves in 41.2 innings of work in his freshman campaign for GCU. He was named second team all-WAC at the conclusion of last season.
Thomas Lerouge would have had a good case for WAC Freshman of the Year, had Schwartz not claimed it first. Lerouge finished with a .342 average in 33 starts for Grand Canyon in 2015, finishing fifth on the squad.
The Lopes' six selections to College Sports Madness' WAC first and second teams led the conference, with CSU Bakersfield featuring four selections.
Grand Canyon begins its season on Feb. 19, when the Lopes welcome in Gonzaga to Brazell Stadium for a four-game set. To view the entire 2016 schedule,
