The Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to extend their winning streak to 11 games and improve to 5-0 in WAC play as they travel to Kansas City, Mo. to take on the UMKC Kangaroos on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016. The game will tip-off at 6 p.m. MT from Municipal Auditorium. Saturday's game will be broadcasted live on the American Sports Network, while Cox 7 Arizona will be picking up the ASN feed to broadcast the game simultaneously.
The two schools have faced off against each other four times, splitting the series 2-2. The last time they met, it was a tale of two halves as the Lopes held the Roos to 20 points on 25.9 percent shooting from the field in the first half to take a 7 point lead into intermission. After opening up a nine-point lead in the second half, UMKC shot 50 percent from the field and hit 25-of-28 free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory, 75-70 at Municipal Auditorium.
DeWayne Russell led GCU with 15 points while
Ryan Majerle added 13 points off the bench.
GCU looks to continue their winning ways as they've won four straight conference games and 10 games overall.
Joshua Braun leads the scoring attack for the Lopes, averaging 17.1 points per game. Braun has scored 19-plus points in six of his last seven games, including all four of the Lopes' conference games to date. Last Saturday night, the reigning WAC Player of the Week set a career-high with 34 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and a ridiculous 17-of-19 mark from the free throw line as GCU held off the Wolverines of Utah Valley 99-88 at GCU Arena. Braun added 19 points on Thursday night at Chicago State in only 27 minutes of action.
Grandy Glaze is another Lope that continues to provide consistent play. The graduate transfer from Saint Louis has recorded back-to-back double-doubles in his last two games against Utah Valley and Chicago State. He now has five double-doubles on the season and continues to lead the WAC with a ridiculous .647 shooting percentage from the field. Glaze has shot over 75 percent from the field in half of the games he's appeared in so far this season.
UMKC enters Saturday night's contest having lost four straight and eight of their last nine after a 7-4 start to the season. On Thursday night, the Roos lost for just the second time this season at home as they dropped a 90-79 contest to Utah Valley. Shayok Shayok and LaVell Boyd scored 21 and 20 points respectively, while Dashawn King added 18 points off the bench. For the season, Martez Harrison leads UMKC with a 15.4 points and 4.4 assists per game while Shayok tops all rebounders, averaging 5.3 boards a game.
Following Saturday's game, the Lopes will return home next weekend hosting CSU Bakersfield on Thursday, Jan. 28 and Saturday, Jan. 30. Tip for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
