The Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to start the conference season 3-0 while also aiming for its ninth consecutive win as they host Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at Grand Canyon University Arena.
It will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools with Utah Valley holding a 3-2 advantage. In their last matchup, the Lopes shot a season-high 61.8 percent from the field and had five players score in double-figures as they cruised to an 83-57 win on Feb. 14, 2014.
The Wolverines are led by first-year head coach Mark Pope, whose squad enters Saturday's game coming off a 98-65 win over UT Rio Grande Valley last Saturday night. Jaden Jackson scored a career-best 31 point and hit a school-record nine 3-pointers in the Wolverines win.
For the season, Konner Frey leads Utah Valley in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.5 points 6.5 rebounds per game. Frey ranks sixth in the WAC in scoring and fifth in rebounding. Frey is one of three Wolverines to be averaging double-figures, joining Jackson and Marcel Davis.
The Lopes are coming off one of their biggest wins in program history, having knocked off New Mexico State 79-75, breaking the Aggies' 14-game conference winning streak that dated back to last season.
Joshua Braun recoded his second double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds, including hit six free throws in as many attempts in the final 12 seconds of the game to seal the victory. The Lopes committed a season-low four turnovers, the lowest number for a WAC team this season.
"It was just a total team win," head coach Dan Majerle said after the game. "Just the toughness that we showed, we haven't had that in the years I've been here."
As the final horn sounded, the Havocs stormed the court to celebrate their first victory over the Aggies.
"That's the first one since I've been here," Majerle added. "Well deserved. [New Mexico State] has always been able to beat us. Those students, they deserve it just as much as we do. They are a huge part of why we're successful this year."
The Lopes will hit the road for the first time in WAC play as they travel to Chicago State and Missouri-Kansas City on Jan. 21 and 23.
