NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Alongside Major League Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz and a handful of MLB coaches, Grand Canyon head baseball coach Andy Stankiewicz presented at the American Baseball Coaches Association Conference in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday. The convention, in its 72nd year, drew over 5,600 coaches to hear nearly 30 different speakers present on a variety of baseball coaching topics.
"There are so many coaches there with such incredible knowledge of the game that have been doing it really well for a long time," Stankiewicz said. "To be able to sit and watch them and listen and learn from the way they do it and they've all had success is really cool."
Stankiewicz, who is gearing up for his fifth season at the helm of the GCU baseball program, presented on the topic of "Building a Team in Today's 'Me' Society". His talk was centered on making sure individuals focus on the benefit of their team rather than their individual statistics.
"As a speaker you're honored," Stankiewicz said. "There were 5,000 or 6,000 coaches there. To share on anything is a pretty cool honor, hopefully for our program, most importantly. I try to make it clear that I wasn't trying to pick on this young generation. Because the game of baseball is so statistically oriented, it can breed a selfish play. We talked about communicating with consistency, being a guy that the team can trust and believe in. You just really try to get them to understand that a walk-on freshman is just as important as that fourth-year senior in terms of how you treat him and how you respect him. Just trying to apply some of my experiences to it."
It wasn't the first time presenting at the annual convention for Stankiewicz, who previously spoke in Anaheim, Calif. at the 2012 ABCA Convention. His presentation in 2012 was titled, "Infield Play – Being Fundamental Without Being Mechanical".
"That's twice now that I've been asked to speak at that convention," Stankiewicz said. "It's always fun. More than anything else, it's a way to reconnect with your peers before we all get really busy into our spring."
Speaking of a busy spring, it's almost that time of year for Stankiewicz and the Lopes. GCU is closing in on its Feb. 19 season opener with opening day only about a month away.
"The guys get antsy, they want to start playing," Stankiewicz said. "We've still got a good month in front of us to really prepare and train and get ready."
Before the season opener, GCU will host an Alumni Game at Brazell Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. Six days later, the Lopes will officially open the season with a four-game series against Gonzaga at Brazell Stadium. For the entire 2016 schedule,
