TALLAHASSEE – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team faced its toughest opponent thus far in the 2015 season as the Antelopes took on the defending national champion, Florida State to close out their first road trip of the year. The Lopes battled all day against the Seminoles but GCU dropped its second straight match falling to the No. 3 team in the country 3-0. Grand Canyon is now 3-3-1 this season.
"Today the women played very well and did GCU proud," head coach Stevie Gill said. "Florida State is an excellent team and a first class organization. We needed to limit the space in order to play and I thought we were very organized."
Â
Grand Canyon did an exceptional job of holding Florida State's offense at bay allowing just two shots in the first 25 minutes of play. Florida State scored in the 26th off a goal from Cheyna Williams to put the Seminoles up 1-0. GCU played defense for most of the first half as the Lopes were unable to get a shot off in the first half while FSU fired off 10.
Â
Florida State continued to pressure GCU's backline but the Lopes were up to challenge and goalkeeper Blakely Fraasch continued to make save after save, holding FSU to just one goal. In the 75th minute the Seminoles would strike again to make it two goals when Michaela Hahn scored her first goal of the season, putting FSU up 2-0. In the 88th minute Florida State tacked on a late goal from Carson Pickett off a penalty kick to make it 3-0.
Â
Fraasch held her own in goal, facing a season-high 31 shots, with 18 shots on target and Fraasch came up with 15 saves.
"These games will serve us exceptionally well for conference play," Gill said. "Nobody likes to get beat but I am proud of the way the women played today."Â
Â
Grand Canyon will continue its road trip next weekend, Sept. 18 and Sept. 20 as they compete at Flagstaff, Ariz. in the NAU Mountain Classic. Â Â
