Grand Canyon University women's basketball coach Trent May and 2013 All-American Judy Jones are taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
May, as head coach, and Jones, as one of the all-star lineup of players, will represent Athletes in Action for a three-game exhibition in Warsaw, Poland, sharing the gospel and basketball. AIA is an organization, founded in 1966 by Dave Hannah, and an offshoot of Cru Ministries (formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ) that's purpose is to use sports as a platform to help people answer questions of faith and to point them to Jesus.
May will coach a team that includes Jones and a number of current and former women's college basketball standouts in games against national teams from Poland, France and Latvia. The pair left Wednesday for Chicago to meet the rest of the team and fly to Warsaw.
"This is an amazing opportunity and I am thankful to be a part of AIA for this ministry/basketball tour," said May. "I am excited to use my platform to share my faith. The Lord has blessed me with many exciting basketball opportunities and this, without a doubt, is another one of those."
It is a special trip for Jones, too. In 2013-14, the program's first in Division I, Jones had her senior season come to a close with a season-ending ACL injury in December. It ended her collegiate career, but the former GCU star has aspirations to play professionally and is excited about getting to play with and against great competition.
"I am very excited and blessed to be part of something as big as this," said Jones, who is making her first trip outside the United States. "Not only do I get a chance to play the sport I love, but also deepen my faith and love in Jesus Christ.
"The thing that makes the opportunity more exciting is I will be playing for coach May."
The team will be staying at the National Olympic Training Center in Warsaw. They will practice for four days before taking on the three national teams.
"We will be spending time with the other teams, building relationships with the opportunity to share our faith," added May.
"It is a special opportunity for me to have Judy along as a player on this trip. The fact that I get to watch her play is special enough, but to coach her on an international stage is awesome. With the way she has been training and getting better for a professional opportunity, I am expecting big results over in Poland."
Along with sharing her faith, Jones is hopeful the international trip will help springboard her professional career. "I was told, 'Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.' I believe that wholeheartedly," said Jones, who was a preseason All-WAC selection in 2013-14 after starring in the program's final year at the Division II level. Jones averaged 16.2 points and 10.3 rebounds as a junior, recording 20 double-doubles.
The trip will run from June 17-27.
