The Western Athletic Conference announced, Tuesday night, its annual postseason awards and the regular season champion Grand Canyon University baseball team was well-represented, placing a combined six student-athletes on the first and second All-WAC Teams.
Garrison Schwartz highlighted the list, taking home Freshman of the Year honors after his impressive rookie campaign.
Chad De La Guerra,
Ben Mauseth and
Paul Panaccione all landed a spot on the first team, while
Humberto Aranda,
Mick Vorhof and Schwartz received second team nods.
Schwartz tied for fifth in the league in batting, hitting .413 on the season, recording 22 RBI and four sacrifice flies at the plate. He was also impressive on defense, posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the outfield.
De La Guerra had another impressive season, hitting at a .373 clip in WAC games during his final campaign. The slugger ranked second in the conference in home runs, connecting on six round-trippers in league games, while tallying the third-most RBI (29) and runs scored (29). The second baseman strung together a WAC-best 24-game hitting streak, while reaching base in 28 straight.
Panaccione was among the top offensive powers in the conference all season long, finishing with an impressive .426 batting average. The junior ranked second in the conference with his 46 hits, while also scoring a WAC-best 34 runs. Panaccione was equally impressive in the field, using his speed and athleticism to display excellent range at short.
Mauseth went out with a bang in 2015. The sophomore had arguably his biggest hits of the season in the Lopes' final two contests, launching a home run in each of GCU's final two games to help the squad clinch the WAC regular season crown. Mauseth started 21 conference games at third base.
Aranda served as GCU's field general in 2015, starting 21 WAC games behind the plate, while producing a .316 average at the dish. He was tagged as the WAC Hitter of the Week (April 20-26) after going 7-for-10 and putting together three multi-hit performances in GCU's series win at Utah Valley. The senior finished his final season with two home runs and 13 RBI in league games.
Vorhof was heavily relied upon out of the pen. The freshman made 10 appearances, accumulating a 2.35 ERA en route to a perfect 4-0 conference record. The right-hander fanned 22 in 23 innings pitched, while also picking up a pair of saves.
Northern Colorado's Jensen Park was named the Player of Year, while Bakersfield's Hayden Carter was selected Pitcher of the Year and Bill Kernen Coach of the Year.
