Grand Canyon University head men's basketball coach Dan Majerle today announced the addition of Keonta Vernon to the 2015-16 roster. Vernon, a 6-6 forward, joins the squad as a transfer student-athlete from the College of Southern Idaho. He will have three years of eligibility remaining at GCU.
"Keonta is a very athletic kid who is extremely competitive and has a strong desire to win," said head coach Dan Majerle. "He will bring us an inside presence with his abilities as a shot blocker, rebounder and overall toughness."
Last season at Southern Idaho, Vernon averaged 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds over 31 games for a team that went 31-3 and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament. He scored in double figures on 12 occasions and had 10 or more rebounds five times. Vernon pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds in back-to-back games on Dec. 6 & 13, while scoring a season-best 22 points in just 17 minutes of action in a win over USU Eastern on Dec. 18. For his efforts last season, Vernon was a First-Team All Scenic West Athletic Conference selection.
"I chose GCU because they are an up and coming program that is making a lot of noise on and off the court," said Vernon. "I loved the campus, the players and the game day atmosphere. I believe coach Majerle and his staff will help me grow over the next three years. Also, GCU has tremendous resources that will help me while I am a Lope and once I am done."
Keonta was an accomplished player at Tulare Union High School in Tulare, Calif., where he helped his team to a 99-20 record during his four-year career. During his time at Tulare, he set the school's all-time scoring mark with more than 1,800 career points. Vernon was a First Team All-State selection during his senior campaign, where he averaged 24.8 points, 17.1 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.
Vernon spent one season at Wyoming, where he redshirted, before transferring to CSI.
