The Grand Canyon University softball scored a combined 31 runs en route to picking up a pair of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) run-rule wins over visiting Utah Valley Friday night at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes earned a 16-7 win in game one, before topping the Wolverines 15-3 in the nightcap.
GCU improves to 27-19 and 8-3 in the WAC, while UVU drops to 16-31 and 3-8 in league play. The Lopes remain in second place in the conference with the two wins.
"I was very pleased to come back from being down 7-2 and get the bats going and take game one," said head coach Ann Pierson. "It was fun to watch the girls play for each other and it was great to see them play with energy and a purpose. They understand what is on the line and it was big for them to do what they did tonight."
In game one, GCU used an 11-run third to defeat UVU. The 11-run frame was highlighted by three home runs, two of those being grand slams. Sophomores
Jenna Coates and
Camree Wartman connected on a grand slam each, while
Kelsey Barak smacked the other round-tripper. Dating back to 2000, the Lopes become just the sixth team in NCAA Division I history to hit a pair of grand slams in the same inning.
Haley Walker's three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth ended the contest.
Wartman and Barak finished with three hits apiece to lead the Canyon offense.
Taylor Nowlin (12-6) worked 2.2 innings in relief of starter
Mariah Valencia to pick up the win in the circle.
In game two, the Lopes once again struck for an 11-run third inning. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Walker—her second of the day—and
Lauren Regester.
Bailey Bergman (4-3) went the distance to pick up the win, as the left-hander fanned three and allowed just three runs in five innings of work.
On the eve of Senior Night, GCU's four seniors all shined. Barak, Regester and Walker all belted home runs, while
Kayla Henry notched three hits and is now tied for the all-time career hits (264) mark at GCU.
"So happy and proud of the seniors for the night they had tonight and we are certainly hoping for them to continue their momentum and success into Senior Night tomorrow when we honor them for their great careers at GCU," concluded Pierson.
The Lopes will close out their 2015 home campaign with a 6 p.m. contest Saturday with Utah Valley. GCU will honor its four seniors prior to first pitch at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium. Fans can find more information on the softball season at
