GCU Loses Final Road Game At Mason

Grand Canyon finished the road portion of its regular season with a 3-0 loss to George Mason in Fairfax, Va., Saturday.
GCU falls to 13-15 and ends the regular season next week with home MIVA matches against No. 14 IPFW at Antelope Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m. both nights. Next Saturday is Senior Night. GCU will honor seniors Keaton Berry and Jon Schaefer.
Tonight, the Lopes lost by set scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-12.
The Patriots had seven service aces, five in the first set, and kept GCU off-balance with an aggressive service attack.
"They have taken their serving to another level," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "(George Mason head coach Fred Chao) said it is the best they've served all season."
GCU junior Gerrard Lipscombe had a team-high eight kills and freshman Shalev Saada added six. Setter Michael Milstein had 15 assists, two of GCU's three service aces, and a team-best five digs. Sean Saxton had two blocks. Freshman libero Josh Phalen came off the bench to get four digs in two sets.
"He really did a nice job coming off the bench and he attacked well," said Price of Phalen.
The Lopes hit .135 for the match with 23 kills on 74 attempts with 13 errors. They had 20 digs and two blocks. Mason hit .441 with 39 kills on 68 swings with nine errors. The Patriots had 33 digs and 4.5 blocks.
Jack Wilson led George Mason with 14 kills and four service aces.
