Grand Canyon University's women's basketball season came to an end with a 46-43 loss to Seattle U at Seattle's Connolly Center Saturday.
Neither team shot well. GCU shot 29.8 percent from the field, while Seattle hit just 23.8 percent of its shots. The Lopes out-rebounded the Redhawks 47-44, but committed 20 turnovers to the hosts' 15. Grand Canyon suffered at the free-throw line, too, hitting just 5-of-14 (35.7 percent), while Seattle was 13-of-20 (65.0).
"Tough loss for the program tonight," said GCU coach Trent May. "It might be the first loss ever for this program while holding a team to 23.8 percent shooting. I never dreamed we could lose a game with that stat.
"We struggled finding a rhythm offensively and the easiest shots of the night, being free throws, didn't go our way either. You can't shoot that percentage ever!"
Against the Redhawks on Saturday, GCU led 18-17 at the half, but were unable to come back after getting down as much as seven, 36-29 with 11:03 to go, and 42-35 with 6:41 left. GCU cut the deficit to two, 45-43, with 1:15 remaining and had a chance to tie or take the lead late, but missed two three-point attempts in the final 30 seconds.
Sophomore
August Touchard led the Lopes with 12 points. Redshirt-junior
Courtney Hayes had 10 rebounds. Off the bench,
Jessica Gajewski added nine points and three steals.
"Big moments require composure and those who stay composed end up on top as Seattle did tonight," added May. "As tough as this loss is to swallow, I'm proud of the fight in our team. We did not yield!"
Returning only 14.4 percent of minutes played and 21.1 percent of its scoring from the 2013-14 season, the Lopes finished the season 7-7 in the Western Athletic Conference and in fourth place. GCU went 13-14 overall.
Seattle U improved to 9-20 and 6-8 in the WAC, finishing fifth. The Redhawks were led by Kaylee Best with 12 points.
