The Grand Canyon University softball team (20-17, 1-1 WAC) split its Western Athletic Conference-opening doubleheader with Seattle U (11-23, 1-1 WAC) Friday at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes prevailed 11-3 in Friday's first game, before falling 7-4 in the nightcap.
"Great first game," said head coach Ann Pierson. "Our offense was explosive and so many kids had multiple hits. Taylor (Nowlin) came in and shut down their offense with great pitches and locations."
In game one, GCU scored four runs in the first and tacked on two more in the second, third and fifth innings to earn the six-inning run-rule victory.
Bianca Boling's two-run triple in the bottom of the first highlighted the scoring for Canyon. Â
Kayla Henry and
Laynee Gomez each recorded three hits to lead the GCU offense.
Kelsey Barak,
Nicole Newbury and
Brittany Medina each added two hits.
En route to picking up her eighth win of the year in the circle,
Taylor Nowlin allowed just two runs and fanned six over five innings of relief work.
Brittany Medina and
Camree Wartman each smashed home runs in game two, but the Lopes couldn't overcome Seattle U's four-run fourth, falling 7-4.
Medina's two-run blast in the bottom of the second cut SU's lead to 3-2, while Wartman's solo shot in the fourth trimmed the Redhawk lead to four (7-3).
Relief pitcher
Kailey Regester hurled three innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits, while striking out five. Offensively,
Haley Walker had a pair of hits at the dish.
"The second game was frustrating because our hitting was moody," said Pierson. "We need to find a way to make adjustments earlier and maintain a very aggressive approach. Seattle is a very good, athletic team and tomorrow will be a good battle."
The Lopes and Redhawks will close out their three-game series with a 3 p.m. contest Saturday. Fans unable to make it out can find a link for live stats to follow the action at
