The Grand Canyon University softball team earned the series win over Seattle U with a 9-1 five-inning run-rule victory over Seattle U Saturday at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium in Phoenix, Ariz. The Antelopes improve to 21-17 and 2-1 in the WAC, while the Redhawks fall to 11-24 and 1-2 in league play.
"I'm really happy to get this last one to win the series," said head coach Ann Pierson. "We knew Seattle would come out fighting so we had to strike first. Kailey (Regester) did a good job keeping them off the board. Taylor (Nowlin) was her usual self; keeping the batters off balance and guessing. Our defense was solid and made some great plays and Brittany (Medina) was outstanding the whole weekend behind the plate."
"Early I felt like we were rushing out at bats and pressing a little," added Pierson. "Once our hitters started to control the pace we really started swinging well. It's always good to get in the bullpen and I was happy to see the entire staff. That's speaks volumes of our offense today."
After
Bianca Boling singled in a run in the bottom of the first to give GCU an early 1-0 lead, Canyon's offense exploded with a six-run fourth to extend its lead to 7-0.
Boling highlighted the fourth inning scoring for GCU, delivering a two-run single, while
Nicole Newbury,
Haley Walker and
Kelsey Barak all contributed with RBI base knocks in the frame.
Starting pitcher
Kailey Regester didn't allow a run in three innings of work to pick up her ninth win of the season in the circle.
Taylor Nowlin was very effective in relief, surrendering just two hits in two innings of action.
Walker's three hits paced GCU's offensive attack, while
Camree Wartman and Newbury both notched a pair of hits.
"We will enjoy this and refocus for a tough battle in Kansas City next weekend," concluded Pierson.
The Lopes will hit the road to continue WAC play next weekend when they travel to Kansas City for a three-game set. Fans can find the complete weekend schedule, as well as any available live links to follow the action at
