Grand Canyon's five-match winning streak came to an end with a 3-0 loss to No. 12 Ball State at Worthen Arena in Muncie, Ind., Saturday.
The Lopes (12-8, 4-6) lost by set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-23. The Cardinals improved to 11-9 and 5-4. The loss split the two-match Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association weekend series. GCU upset the nationally-ranked Cards, 3-2, on Friday.
"We didn't play very well and that's the bottom line," said GCU coach Jeremy Price.
Redshirt-junior Ryan Mather led GCU with 12 kills and nine digs. Shalev Saada had 11 kills and hit .318 (11-4-22). He added seven digs. Redshirt-freshman middle hitter Ashton King had three solo blocks and six block assists. Mather also had a solo block and a pair of block assists. Mather, Saada and Gerrard Lipscombe each had one service ace.
"Ashton blocked well and Shalev had a very good offensive night," added Price on some match positives. "Ryan was solid getting some stuff out of system."
The match had 20 ties, 11 in the third set, and 10 lead changes, five in the third set. GCU led by four, 16-12, but the Cardinals answered with seven straight points and led the rest of the match. Mather and King had back-to-back solo blocks to spoil a pair of match points, but BSU was able to wrap it up on a Mitch Weiler kill.
Both teams had three service aces. GCU had more service errors (7-3). GCU hit .170 with 19 attack errors. Ball State hit .280 with 14 mistakes. The Lopes out-blocked the Cards 11-7 and had more digs, 39-37. Ball State had a 60 percent sideout ratio, while Grand Canyon was at 46 percent.
The Lopes continue their road trip to Chicago and take on No. 1 ranked Loyola, the 2014 NCAA Champion, Wednesday and Thursday. Matches are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. (Arizona time), both nights.
"Loyola is really good and we'll have to pass a lot better," added Price.
