Grand Canyon hung close in each of three sets with No. 3 Lewis, but was unable to knock off the Flyers in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener for both teams. GCU (5-3, 0-1) lost 3-0 to Lewis (9-1, 1-0) by set scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 at Antelope Gymnasium Friday.
The teams play again Sunday at 2 p.m.
"We didn't have the end game," said GCU coach Jeremy Price. "We played for two-thirds of the set and when you're playing an elite team that has been to the NCAA tournament two of the last three years, you have to play the entire set. We didn't do that tonight."
GCU led much of the third set, pulling ahead 17-13 on a kill from Gerrard Lipscombe, but the Flyers scored the next eight, getting a boost from the serve of Patrick Lilly. In the second, there were 11 ties, the last coming at 17-17 on a kill from senior Jon Schaefer, but a 3-0 run gave the nationally-ranked Flyers an advantage they wouldn't relinquish.
The Lopes jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the opener, but the Flyers tied it at 7-7 and took the lead for good at 10-9. It was the start of a 4-0 flurry. GCU was able to get within two, as late as 20-18, but Lewis closed out the set.
"They served really well and put pressure on us," added Price. "We will have to pass better Sunday."
Lipscombe led the Lopes with 10 kills, eight digs, two service aces and three block assists. In his GCU debut, freshman Shalev Saada had four kills, two digs and a service ace in the third set. Saada and sophomore setter Michael Milstein gave the Lopes a spark in the third. Milstein finished with 12 assists in his lone set of the night. Ryan Matheradded nine kills, four digs and two block assists. Keaton Berry had five kills and hit .333 to go with two block assists.Schaefer finished with five kills.
