Grand Canyon (16-12, 7-4) ventures out on the road for the last time this season for a pair games, beginning with Chicago State (6-22, 2-9) tonight at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago, Ill. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. (Arizona time). The WAC matchup can be heard on radio on KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT "TuneIn Radio" App), with GCU Alum Michael Potter calling the action alongside 'The Coach", Dan Nichols.VS. CHICAGO STATEGrand Canyon and Chicago State are set to meet for the fourth time in school history. The Cougars defeated the Antelopes 56-55 at GCU Arena on Jan. 31. The Lopes led by as many as 14 points in the second half before the Cougars made a run over the final few minutes to take a one-point advantage with seven seconds to play. DeWayne Russell's jumper with time winding down was blocked by a CSU defender to put an end to the back-and-forth contest.
LAST TIME OUTGrand Canyon had its four-game win streak snapped with a 72-55 loss at home to New Mexico State on Feb. 21. GCU shot 40.4 percent (19-for-47) from the floor, making only 4-of-13 from behind the arc. The Aggies used their size advantage to dominate on the glass, 34-19, leading to a 38-22 points in the paint advantage.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALLGCU committed only 26 turnovers in a four-game stretch from Jan. 31 – Feb. 14, committing eight turnovers on two occasions and only five each in the other two games. However, the Lopes committed 26 turnovers in the past two games, 12 on Feb. 19 vs. UTPA and 14 on Feb. 21 vs. New Mexico State. It is the most in a two-game span since the squad had 27 miscues on Dec. 28 vs. Abilene Christian (11) and Dec. 30 vs. Harvard (16). The Lopes are 6-7 this season when turning the ball over more than their opponent.
LOOKING TO GET ON TRACK WITH THE 3-BALLGCU made 46 3-pointers in five games from Jan. 24 – Feb. 7 for an average of 9.2 per game. The Lopes shot 42.6 percent in (46-for-108) in those games. In its last three games, GCU has made only 12 for a four per game average and are shooting 31.6 percent (12-for-38). The Lopes made a season-high 11 three-pointers on Jan. 24 at UTPA and have shot over 40.0 percent from beyond the arc nine times.
