New Mexico State's Tamera William scored on a driving layup with :02 left to hand Grand Canyon a heartbreaking 61-60 loss at Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M., Saturday.
The Lopes (11-13, 5-6) had two leads in the final minute in the back-and-forth thriller. New Mexico native
Astrea Reed hit a floater in the lane with :37 remaining to put the Lopes up 58-57, but the Aggies answered with a layup from Sasha Weber, who failed to convert a three-point play. GCU point guard
Courtney Hayes drove and scored with 10.5 seconds left for a 60-59 advantage, but the first-place Aggies, who clinched a share of the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title with the victory, followed with the game-winner from William.
The Aggies improve to 18-7 overall and 11-1 in the WAC. It was their 11th straight win at home.
Hayes finished with 16 points, one shy of equaling her career-high. She also had a game-high seven assists, also one shy of her all-time best, and grabbed eight rebounds, tying
Cheyenne Hedrington for team-high honors.
August Touchard added 14 points, including 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Weber and Freeman led New Mexico State with 17 each.
The Lopes went on a 9-0 run in the middle of the second half to take a 45-34 lead with 11:37 to go. Hayes had six during the rally, including 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Off the bench,
Devyn Edwards added a three-point play.
On a
Jessica Gajewski three-pointer, GCU led 56-49 with 3:27 remaining. Weber quickly answered with a three-pointer; then got a steal and layup to cut it to 56-54. The Aggies Shanice Davis tied it 56-56 with 1:33 remaining.
GCU shot 42.6 percent from the field and hit 9-of-24 (37.5) from three-point range. Five different players had at least one three-pointer. The Lopes were hurt by turnovers and the Aggies offensive rebounds. GCU committed 18 miscues, while the hosts had 23 offensive boards.
"I'm proud of the fight today," said GCU coach Trent May. "Our players have learned how to compete. The toughest part of not winning the game is giving them 41 extra possessions (23 offensive rebounds, 18 turnovers). We were fortunate to be in the game, but could have walked away with a convincing win if we do the little things. We will get better from this. I do want to credit New Mexico State as they made big plays to secure the win. They are a well-coached team."
Hedrington had nine points to go with her eight boards. Reed finished with eight points.
Tori Morris had four rebounds in five minutes of play. Edwards had five points and three boards. Gajewski also scored five points.
