The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (16-11, 7-3) will go for their fifth-straight win when they welcome New Mexico State (18-10, 10-1) to GCU Arena tonight. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. as the Lopes also look to close the gap to first in the conference, currently trailing the Aggies by 2.5 games. NEW MEXICO STATEThis marks the fifth meeting between GCU and New Mexico State, with the Aggies holding the 4-0 lead in the all-time series. NMSU swept the two-game series last season and won the Western Athletic Conference tournament to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament. This year, the Aggies defeated the Lopes, 85-63 on Jan. 22 in Las Cruces.
LAST TIME OUTGCU led for only 46 seconds during the game, yet came away with a 64-59 win over UTPA on Thursday at GCU Arena. GCU trailed 57-50 with 3:38 remaining, before scoring the next nine points to grab a two-point lead. The Broncs tied the game at 59 with 1:07 left in the game, setting the stage for a Joshua Braun layup with 20 seconds left that gave the Lopes the lead for good. Davis finished with 14, one shy of his career high. Braun also finished with 14, 12 coming in the second half.
NAIL BITERS!GCU has played in 12 games decided by five or fewer points this season, including four of their last five. The Lopes are 7-5 in those games. In those 12 contests, GCU has lost five by a combined eight points and have won six by a combined 21 points. Of those five losses, three have been by two points and two have been by just one point.
THE KID IS GROWING UPDe'Andre Davis has continued to grow this year and his role continues to expand with it. Davis played 27 minutes in the win over UTPA, scoring 14 points for the second-straight game. He has made 11-of-16 from the floor in that stretch. A 63.3 percent shooter from the line, Davis has made 6-of-7 (85.7%) in his last two. He dished out a career-best six assists in the win over UTPA and now has 45 this season, third most on the squad.
