After the visiting Bison scratched across a run in the top of the third, the Antelopes answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to go on top, 2-1. With the bases loaded,
Kai Kealoha scored on a
Chad De La Guerra groundout to plate the first run of the game.
Josh Meyer then stepped in and laced a double to left, scoring
David Walker, who recorded an infield single earlier in the frame.
The Bison regained the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring twice to take a 3-2 advantage. After going down in order in the bottom of the fourth, Canyon's offense exploded in the fifth, tallying four runs.
Kealoha opened the inning with a base knock and advanced to second when Walker earned a base on balls. Two batters later, Preseason WAC Player of the Year De La Guerra delivered a RBI single to center, scoring Kealoha and putting Walker on third. After a failed pickoff attempt by NDSU, Walker crossed the plate for GCU's fourth run. Freshman
Garrison Schwartz, who finished 2-for-4 at the dish in his collegiate debut, drove a pitch to center to score De La Guerra. On the same play, Schwartz would come all the way around to score after an errant throw by the Bison catcher put the ball into right field, allowing Schwartz to touch home.
Neither team would generate any offense the rest of the way, as the Lopes used a trio of pitchers to relieve starter
Andrew Naderer and hold NDSU scoreless in the final four innings.Naderer worked the first six innings of Friday's opener to pick up the win, fanning three and giving up just one earned run.
Ruben Rincon entered the game in relief of Naderer and tossed an inning and a third before
Travis Garcia-Perreira got the final out of the eighth inning.
Jaren Drummond came in and pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first-career save.
The Lopes will be back on the diamond tomorrow when they take on Omaha. First pitch at Brazell Stadium is set for 6 p.m. Fans unable to make it out can visit
