The Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to get back to their winning ways as they return home to take on the Southern University Jaguars on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Grand Canyon University Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT. It is the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Head coach Roman Banks and his Jaguars come to Phoenix looking for their sixth win of the young season. After dropping the season opener at Arkansas, Southern has rolled off five in a row, most recently taking down Southeastern Louisiana last Friday night. Shawn Prudhomme came off the bench and scored 23 points and hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 14 seconds left to lift Southern to a 73-69 win. Through six games, Adrian Rodgers leads the Jags in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game. Rodgers is shooting 42.9 percent from the field but 47.1 percent from 3-point range. Jared Sam leads Southern with an average of 5.7 rebounds per game while Christopher Hyder is averaging 5.5 assists per game.
The Lopes look to move on from a tough trip to Louisville, where very little went their way. Grand Canyon played Louisville close in the opening minutes of the game as they led 10-7 early, but the Cardinals were then able to break a 12-12 tie wide open, going on a 26-3 run to open up a 23 point lead over the Lopes. Joshua Braun led the Lopes with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal while Gerard Martin added 8 points.
"We started off a little soft and guys just continued making shots," head coach Dan Majerle said. "When they did happen to miss a few shots, we couldn't rebound, which is another one of our strengths."
It was the first game in which Grand Canyon did not win the battle of the boards as they struggled with Louisville's size up front with the Cardinals out-rebounding the Lopes 55-20, including a 26-5 edge in the first half. That size helped contribute to a 31-6 edge in second-chance points and a 46-24 advantage of points in the paint. Louisville also blocked 9 shots.
