The Grand Canyon men's basketball team hosts the University of Nebraska Omaha on Sunday, Dec. 13 in their second game as part of the Global Sports Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. MT at Grand Canyon University Arena. It will be the second all-time meeting between the two schools with the Lopes winning a 88-84 overtime thriller on Nov. 29, 1997.
Omaha wraps up their three-game road trip and enters Sunday's game having dropped three of their last found, including a 85-78 loss at Missouri on Wednesday night. Head coach Derrin Hansen ranks second all-time in school history with 165 career victories in 11 seasons. The Mavericks returned nine letterwinners from its 2014-15 team, led by senior guard Devin Patterson who leads the team in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Sophomore forward Tre-Shawn Thomas is averaging a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game while contributing 15.9 points per game as well. Scoring has come from up and down the Omaha roster with 10 different Mavericks having had at least one double-figure scoring performance this season. From the defensive standpoint, junior guard Tra-Deon Hollins leads the nation in steals (37) while helping Omaha to rank fifth in the country in total steals (90).
The Lopes are looking to extend their unbeaten home record with an eighth straight win at home to start the season for the first time since 2007-08. Their last time on the hardwood, Grand Canyon was able to snap Southern's five-game winning streak, beating the Jaguars 70-56 on Tuesday night. The Lopes used a 15-2 run early in the second half to erase a five-point deficit and take control of the game. Forward
Grandy Glaze scored a career-high 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field, the second time he has shot 90 percent from the field with at least 10 attempts this season.
"Grandy got it going early," head coach Dan Majerle said after the game. "He's a guy --when he's scoring -- you give him the ball. He was able to get it in the post and they weren't double-teaming him. He's pretty quick down there. He did a good job of either facing him up or using his quickness to score around the basket."
The Lopes also controlled the boards, a recipe for success so far this season, outrebounding the Jaguars 41-28. Grand Canyon is now 7-0 on the season when they have outrebounded their opponent. Contributions came from all positions as forward
Keonta Vernon and guard
DeWayne Russell tied for the team lead with 7 rebounds.
"We knew we could get around them on the offensive boards," Majerle added. "That should be Grandy and Keonta's job to rebound. When Grandy's not rebounding we're not going to have a good night. I say it all the time, 'We've got guys who can really rebound. DeWayne is probably the only guy who can't rebound.' Now, we just have to adjust to that."
It will be a quick turnaround for the Lopes as they will host Delaware State on Tuesday night at GCU Arena.
