PHOENIX – It was listed as an exhibition game, but the Grand Canyon men's basketball game and its crowd was in mid-season form against New Mexico Highlands. In front of a crowd of 6,625 fans, the Antelopes defeated the Cowboys 84-53 in their lone exhibition game of the season.
"To have this kind of crowd in an exhibition game is amazing," head coach Dan Majerle said. "Our guys felt it, they were very pumped up. For the most part, I thought it was a really good game for us."
The Lopes were tenacious on defense in the first half, holding New Mexico Highland to just 22.6 percent from the floor.
De'Andre Davis was perfect in the first half, scoring 10 points after shooting 3-of-3 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
DeWayne Russell got hot late in the first half, scoring 14 points including ending the first half with a buzzer-beating layup. Eight different players scored in the first half for GCU as they went into halftime with a 47-31 lead.
"It's good that we have guys who can step in play [off the bench], because if you play a lot of minutes – and that's what we've done the last two years – guys get tired," Majerle said. "And now we can sub in and sub out and we can keep guys fresh."
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, GCU extended its lead to 28 points as
Josh Braun jumped into double figures, scoring 10 points. New Mexico Highlands struggled to deal with the size of
Boubacar Toure as he recorded a double-double in his first career game, finishing with 13 points while pulling down 11 boards.
"I love the fact that we can throw it inside this year," Majerle said. "Last year we couldn't do that. We've got guys that are really athletic. Boubacar obviously with his size in there is going to be huge."
The Lopes were able to outrebound the Cowboys 52-34 throughout the game including 18 boards on the offensive end. Twelve different players saw playing time for Majerle as the Lopes cruised to the 84-53 victory.
Grand Canyon will officially begin the regular season next Friday, Nov. 13, against Portland State at GCU Arena.
