The Grand Canyon men's basketball team will begin the 2015-16 season taking on the Portland State Vikings on Friday, Nov. 13. Tipoff at Grand Canyon University Arena is slated for 7 PM MT.
It's the first all-time meeting between the two schools. Head coach
Dan Majerle and the Lopes are coming off a 17-15 record in the 2015-16 season, their first winning record against a full Division I schedule with an 8-6 conference record within the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) which placed them second in the standings.
The Portland State Vikings will go after a third straight winning season in 2015-16 with Tyler Geving entering his seventh season as Head Coach on the Park Blocks and 12th overall. Portland State has five returning letterwinners, three returning starters and two returning redshirts from a team that went 15-14 a year ago. The Vikings lost their top three scorers in DaShaun Wiggins, Gary Winston and Tiegbe Bamba, but junior forward Braxton Tucker (11.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, .500 FG%), senior center Collin Spickerman (4.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg), and junior guards Bryce White (9.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and Zach Gengler (4.6 ppg, 2.5 rpg) return with a combined 63 starts.
The Lopes enter Friday's opener coming off an impressive 84-52 win over New Mexico Highlands in their lone exhibition contest. Majerle stressed in the offseason on the need to add depth and become bigger and stronger to provide an inside presence that GCU lacked a year ago. The team responded by outscoring the Cowobys 42-6 in the paint and outscoring their bench 48-19.
"I love the fact that we can throw it inside this year," Majerle said following the win over Highlands. "Last year we couldn't do that. I thought
Boubacar (Toure) did well.
Uros (Ljeskovic),
Keonta (Vernon), all those guys – we can bang the ball inside and then we've got guards who can really penetrate."
The Lopes were tenacious on defense in the first half, holding New Mexico Highland to just 22.6 percent from the floor. The Cowboys struggled to deal with the size of Toure as he recorded a double-double in his first career game, finishing with 13 points while pulling down 11 boards. Senior guard
DeWayne Russell added 16 points of his own. A total of four Lopes players finished in double figures with sophomore guards
De'Andre Davis (14) and
Josh Braun (13) adding to the scoring attack.
