PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University softball program and head coach Ann Pierson announced the Lopes' 2016 recruiting class which included five players. The incoming class featured three athletes from Arizona and two from California.
Coach Pierson tossed around the words "fearless", "home run power" and "immediate impact" to describe the new signees. The five individuals will finish their high school careers this spring and join Grand Canyon for the 2016-2017 school year.
Megan Stevens, RHP/UTIL Stevens comes to Grand Canyon from Southern California and Etiwanda High School. As a member of the Eagles softball team, Stevens has won first team all-league. She has helped lead Etiwanda to three California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Sectional games in three seasons. Not only does she get it done in the circle, she was also the recipient of Silver Slugger and Golden Glove awards.
Coach Pierson: "Megan is a hard thrower with movement and commands her zone. She is also an infielder with a strong arm and range. She is a right-handed hitter who will put up power numbers as well as being an RBI threat. I expect Megan to make an impact immediately."
Loriann Olson, 2B/OF Loriann, who goes by "Lulu", comes to GCU from Ironwood Ridge High School just outside of Tucson. A three-time scholar athlete, Olson helped lead Ironwood Ridge to the 2014 State Championship as a sophomore. Olson also plays basketball in high school and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Coach Pierson: "Lulu is a left-handed hitter/slapper with tremendous speed and RBI power. She is a menace for defenses because of her many tools. Her speed allows for incredible range and she will be versatile as a defender."
Hailey Freeman, 3B Freeman, along with Stevens, joins the Lopes by way of Etiwanda High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. She continues the excellent academic standards of the 2016 class as a three-time scholar athlete and honor roll award winner. In all three high school seasons to date, Freeman has been named a first team all-league selection.
Coach Pierson: "Hailey is fearless at third base and has a strong arm. She has quick reactions and covers the short game. Hailey is a power hitter from the right side who has the ability to attack defenses and put up runs."
Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage, RHP/3B Brianna, who goes by "Bobo", is graduating this spring from Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson. She is a three-rime honor roll selection and a member of the National Honors Society. Aguilar-Beaucage helped lead the Lancers to a State Championship game appearance and runner-up finish. She has been invited to the Canada Cup and Canadian Open Championship, an international fastpitch tournament.
Coach Pierson: "Bobo throws hard and has nasty off-speed pitches to keep batters off balance. She is extremely smart and aggressive in the circle. She also plays third base and has great range and a strong arm. As a hitter, she provides gap and home run power and will also have an immediate impact on both sides of the ball."
Jordon Keeton, UTIL Keeton joins the Lopes from Casa Grande and Vista Grande High School. In 88 career high school games over three seasons, Keeton boasts a .509 batting average including a .604 average in 2014 as a sophomore. She made her presence known even as a freshman, hitting for the cycle in an April 2013 win.
Coach Pierson: "Jordon is a true utility player and can play all positions in the infield. She has a strong arm at all positions and great speed to cover ground in the outfield. As a right-handed hitter she has gap power who will knock runners in as well as be a threat as a leadoff hitter."
