PHOENIX -- Following their first win in a season opener since the 2007-08 season, the Grand Canyon men's basketball team looks to make it two in a row as they host the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at Grand Canyon Arena. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. MT.
Head Coach Dan Majerle's Lopes will be facing off against Black Hills State for just the second time in school history. The first matchup between the two schools came when GCU pulled out a 69-67 win at Antelope Gymnasium on Dec. 9, 1995.
Nearly 20 years later, the Lopes welcome second-year head coach Jeff Trumbauer and the Yellow Jackets to Phoenix. Trumbauer has a 11-20 career record for the Green and Gold and is looking to improve on their ninth place finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference a year ago.
Black Hills State split their first two games of the 2015-16 season last week, dropping their season-opener 75-74 to Presentation College on Friday before bouncing back to take down Johnson & Wales (Colo.) University 83-61 the following night. Through two games, senior forward Riley Ryan leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounds (8.0 rpg).
GCU is coming off a 82-72 win over Portland State in front of a crowd of 7,249 on Friday night. Sophomore guard
De'Andre Davis came off the bench to lead the Lopes and set a career-high in points (19) while tying his career-high in assists (6) and steals (7). Davis also pulled down 7 rebounds and was perfect on all nine free throw attempts in the win. The Lopes knocked down 33-of-40 (82.5 pct) free throws to hold off a second-half run by the Vikings.
"It was a good win even though it was an ugly win," Majerle said. "We played really well in the first half but we have to play better to start the second half. It feels good to win but we got a long ways to go. I am proud of our guys stepping up to the free throw line and making them when they count."
Despite an early 10-2 deficit, GCU quickly went on a 23-4 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 9-point advantage. Led by senior guard
DeWayne Russell's 8 points and 3 assists, the Lopes took a 14-point advantage into the half.
Sophomore guard
Joshua Braun struggled from the field shooting only 2-of-10, but made up for it by pulling down 10 rebounds and going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line to record his first career double-double.
"I'm not worried about Josh at all," Majerle said of Braun. "He's a great shooter, you can post him up, knock down his free throws, just a competitor. To go through four major knee surgeries and still be able to play at the level he plays just tells you the kind of heart he's got… He's just going to play hard. He's going to find us a way to win. He's just got a lot of heart."
Following the matchup with Black Hills State, it will be a quick turnaround for the Lopes, as they will then host Alcorn State on Thursday night.
