The Grand Canyon baseball team and head coach Andy Stankiewicz announced GCU's 2016 Recruiting Class on Wednesday.
Cuba Bess (Fruita Monument HS, C)
Bess was an honorable mention All-State selection as a junior at Fruita Monument High School. This past May, Bess was selected to the Colorado High School Futures Game, hosted by the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Bess led the club – who went 18-2 on the season – with a .562 batting average. 24 of his 36 base hits on the year were of the extra-base variety.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "We are very excited to have Cuba aboard at GCU. We believe his left-handed bat will step right in and compete for playing time as a freshman. He comes from a baseball family which is evident in his knowledge and passion for the game of baseball."
Â
Kona Quiggle (Greenway HS, OF)
Quiggle was a second team All-State outfielder as a junior at Greenway High School in Phoenix. In 33 games for the Demons, Quiggle logged a .365 batting average with seven home runs. His on-base percentage of .465 on-base percentage helped lead Greenway to a 27-7 overall record.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "Kona is a very physical switch-hitting outfielder. No doubt one of the best outfielders in the state of Arizona. We love his energy and hustle on the field. His style of play will fit in well at GCU."
Â
Tyler Hansen (Snowflake HS, LHP)
Hansen has thrown all three years of high school at Snowflake, lowering his ERA each season. In his latest campaign as a junior, he amassed 53 innings with a 2.25 ERA and 74 strikeouts. He was a Division III All-State Second Team selection in 2015.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "Tyler is a very talented young left-handed pitcher with tremendous upside. He understands how to pitch and keep hitters off balance. We are very fortunate to get him and expect big things as a freshman."
Â
Ryan Alexander (Sandra Day O'Connor HS, RHP)
Alexander joins the Lopes from O'Connor High School in Phoenix where he was one of the Eagles' top hitters in terms of RBIs and doubles. He comes to Grand Canyon as a right-handed pitcher, where Coach Stankiewicz compliments his mechanics.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "Ryan was a young man that came on over the summer in our club program. He has a nice, easy delivery with a good sinking fastball. We believe he has only scratched the surface of his potential on the mound."
Â
Quin Cotton (Regis Jesuit HS, OF)
Cotton led the Raiders with a .457 batting average in 2015 as a junior and is a two-time Aurora Sentinel All-City Baseball Team selection. He led his team in runs scored (17), hits (37) and RBIs (17). He hit .667 (12-for-18) and slugged four home runs in the postseason. As a sophomore at Regis Jesuit, Cotton hit .318 on a team that finished 21-5 and went to the postseason as a No. 2 overall seed.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "The more we saw Quin play, the more we liked him. He has a strong baseball IQ. He understands the details of the game to help his team win. He will make us a stronger unit in the outfield."
Â
Jack Schneider (Basha HS, LHP)
Schneider comes to Grand Canyon by way of Basha High School in Chandler who Coach Stankiewicz says displays tremendous control of all three of his pitches.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "Jack Schneider is a very competitive left-handed pitcher. All he does is win baseball games. Jake is not a hard-throwing left-hander but his ability to throw three pitches for strikes whenever he wants makes him effective. Needless to say, we are excited to have him."
Â
Degan Harte (Yavapai JC, RHP)
Harte is a junior college signee from Yavapai College in Prescott. Out of O'Connor High School, Harte was ranked as the No. 4 right-handed pitcher in the state of Arizona, and in the top 250 high school pitching prospects in the country. As a freshman, he appeared in 19 games including 12 starts, going 8-6 with a 5.33 ERA.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "We have been following Degan since high school and are excited to have him join our program next year. His development on the mound since high school is undeniable. He has turned himself into one of the top pitchers in Arizona. We are counting on him to pitch right away next year."
Â
Johnny Morell (Basha HS, RHP)
Morell joins Schneider as a pitcher out of Basha High School to join Grand Canyon for the 2016-17 year. He made the transition from California to Arizona in high school and will stay in the Valley of the Sun for his collegiate career with GCU.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "Johnny is a highly-touted right-handed pitcher, originally from Southern California. He is a power arm that can run his fastball in the low 90s. His projectability is off the charts because of his great work ethic and physicality."
Â
Sam Huff (Arcadia HS, C)
As a junior at Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Huff was a First Team All-Section choice. Through the first three years of high school, Huff's batting average has consistently hovered around the .400 mark, peaking at .415 as a sophomore. He has collected 80 RBIs and seven home runs in his high school career.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "Sam has become one of the premier high school catchers in the country. It has been fun watching him develop into a complete baseball player. We strongly believe we may recruited two of the finest catching prospects in the country in Sam Huff and Cuba Bess."
Â
Dellan Raish (Cactus Shadows, LHP)
Raish made 13 appearances on the mound for Cactus Shadows (23-7-1) in 2015, finishing 8-1 with an impressive 1.91 ERA. In 40 1/3 innings of work, he struck out 66 batters and limited opponents to a .163 batting average.
Â
Coach Stankiewicz: "There is a lot to like about Dellan. HE has a very smooth left-handed delivery. His fastball is mid 80s right now but no doubt, with his size and frame, it will increase. He also has a great feel with his change-up which will make him more game ready as a freshman. He also comes from one of the best high school programs in the state at Cactus Shadows."
