PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon baseball team began practice this past week and it is all geared towards Feb. 19, 2016, the start of the 2016 season. Head coach Andy Stankiewicz and the Antelopes have released their 2016 schedule that features 30 home games and 24 games on the road as GCU looks to defend its first ever Western Athletic Conference title.
"We wanted to be aggressive as we can with our non-conference schedule with the inability to go to the postseason," Stankiewicz said heading into his fifth season at the helm for GCU. "We want to build our guys up so when are eligible to make the postseason, our guys are used to playing in big environments."
Stankiewicz and his staff were able to place their players in the 'big time' environments they wished with matchups against Gonzaga, Central Michigan, Saint Mary's and Tennessee to open the season. The Lopes will host their second annual GCU Classic in late February to get the season going against the Gaels, the Chippewas and the Volunteers.
Fans will get plenty of opportunities to see their squad early this season as the team begins the 2016 schedule with an 11-game home stand against opponents from the Mid-American Conference, the West Coast Conference, the Summit League, the Mountain West and the SEC.
"It is going to be a difficult schedule but that is the way it should be," Stankiewicz said. "We want our guys challenged early and often because that will prepare us when we head into conference."
The Lopes do not head out on the road until the month of March, against San Francisco. GCU will face some familiar opponents from 2015 including UNLV and Kansas, which GCU defeated last season. At the end of March, Grand Canyon will make the trip to Texas to face Houston, who finished 2015 No. 13 in the country by Baseball America. The longest road trip of the season for the Lopes starts on April 22nd in Grand Forks, N.D. against North Dakota and will end in Manhattan, Kans. versus Kansas State.
Grand Canyon will begin its WAC title defense on Mar. 24th at home against Utah Valley in one of 12 WAC matches at home. The season will conclude on May 21st on the road against Texas Rio Grande Valley after 15 WAC road matches.
In its first two seasons in the WAC, GCU has finished in second place in 2014 and first place in 2015 and once again, Stankiewicz has the pieces to make another deep run in the conference again this season.
