Baseball America Release (Password Required) PHOENIX - Grand Canyon baseball is receiving national recognition coming off a 2015 Western Athletic Conferencetitle. The Antelopes 2015 recruiting class was named as a top-35 recruiting class by Baseball America, the only WACteam to be recognized by the publication with a top-35 class.
"It is a huge honor and exciting to be recognized by Baseball America," head coach Andy Stankiewicz said. "The credit goes to Coach Choate and Coach Wallis because they hit the road and are always recruiting non-stop. It is not easy being a Division I assistant baseball coach but our coaches work 24/7 watching games and visiting players in their homes."
Choate and Wallis hit the road looking for the 2016 team to become more athletic and every student-athlete that was brought in meets that criteria, findingplayers that can play multiple positions andimprove's the team's depth.
Grand Canyon joins Arizona State as the only other school from Arizona to receive a national ranking recruiting class from Baseball America. The Lopes dominated the state, signing 14 players from the state of Arizona. GCU was alsoable to sign Preston Pavlica (Las Vegas, Nev.), Marc Mumper(Highland Ranch, Colo.) and SantaAna Collegetransfer AJ Franks (
Anaheim, Calif.).
Despite not being eligible for the postseason, Stankiewicz has been able to bring top-quality talent to play for the Lopes. He and his staff were able to keep the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, Tyler Wyatt, in his home state. Wyatt is expectedtosee playing time at shortstop and on the pitching mound. Brick Paskiewicz moves from Paradise Valley Community College to Camelback Road, staying in town after being named the MVP of the Alaska Summer League with a .341 batting average.
Stankiewicz and his staff were also able to find talent outside of the state of Arizona like Marc Mumper. The freshman was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 37
th round of the Major League Baseball Draft this past June.
After a regular season WAC title, Stankiewicz has not rested onprior accomplishments but rather has reloaded the squad and is poised to make another run in the conference this season with 14 freshman and two transfers.
"A WAC title helps but the growth of the university is a fantastic recruiting tool because they feel the energy around the campus of Grand Canyon University" Stankiewicz said. "Being a Division I program and our challenging non-conference schedule is very enticing to a player but now it is time to get to work."
