PHOENIX – Facing off in their final meet before the Western Athletic Conference Championships, the Grand Canyon University men's and women's cross country team head to Santa Clara, Calif., this weekend for Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational. This will be the third straight season the Lopes have competed in the meet.
The Division I competition features teams such as Cal, Stanford, Hawai'i, Loyola Marymount, and Texas Tech. Also competing in both legs of the meet is WAC competitor New Mexico State who placed second and fourth in the men's and women's WAC Championships last year, respectively.
After taking on the Mesa Thunderbird Classic, last weekend in Mesa, Ariz., GCU placed third in the women's 5k and fifth in the men's 8k. The women's squad was led by junior
Natalie Cardwell's sixth place finish (19:28.7) and the men were led by freshman
Jonny Holsten who placed 12
th (27:34.3).
Prior to the meet in Mesa, the Lopes competed in Kansas's Rim Rock Farm Classic where the women's squad earned a team-best third place finish at the event and had three in the top-25, including
Kelsi Klotter, Emily Wilkinson, and Mariah Montoya. The men placed eighth with
Samuel Proctor leading the way at 22
nd.
