MESA, Ariz – The Grand Canyon University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the Mesa Thunderbird Classic today, hosted by Mesa Community College. The women's squad earned a third place finish, while the men's team placed fifth.
Pima Community College led both the women's 5k event and the men's 8k event, followed by Mesa Community College who took second in both.
The women's squad was led by junior
Natalie Cardwell's sixth place finish with a time of 19:28.7, followed closely by sophomore
Kellie Stroupe who finished eighth (19:39.4). Junior
Taylor Bond placed 16
th with a time of 20:09.4. Sophomore
Bailie Jones and senior
Nicole Zampino rounded out the top-five for the Lopes, finishing 20
th and 21
st, respectively.
For the men's team, freshman
Jonny Holsten headed up the pack with a 12
th place finish (27:34.3). Sophomore
Garrett Mulkey was the next finisher at 14
th (27:47.9) and
Joshua Munoz was third with his 25
th place finish with a time of 28:26.1.
Kalen Meza's 28
th (28:57.8) and
Brandon Gonzalez's 34
th (29:57.4) closed out the team scores.
Grand Canyon will travel to Santa Clara, Calif., on Oct. 17 to take on Santa Clara's Bronco Invitational. A full recap will be available at
