Grand Canyon continued its strong finish to the non-conference season with an 87-44 victory over San Diego Christian (5-10) at GCU Arena, Saturday.
The Lopes (6-7) have won four of their last five games, with the lone loss coming to nationally-ranked Louisville. GCU begins Western Athletic Conference play Jan. 10 at Bakersfield (2 p.m., Arizona Time).
Against the Hawks, Grand Canyon led from start to finish. The final margin of 43 points was the largest lead of the game. The Lopes had 13 players score, led by
Jessica Gajewski, who tied a career-high with 18 points.
Casey Rarrick had 14 and
August Touchard scored 13.
Courtney Hayes had a career-best 11 rebounds to go with seven assists, four points and three steals. Hayes had all of her points, eight rebounds and six assists in the second half. Twelve different players had at least one rebound.
"It was a good team performance," said coach Trent May. "A coaches goal is to see improvement each time out and today we had good consistency.
"There are still things we have to improve on. All the things we've been doing are to prepare us for conference and now that conference test is upon us."
San Diego Christian shot only 25.4 percent (15-of-59) and just 22.6 (7-of-31) in the second half. GCU outrebounded the Hawks 52-30. Along with three double figure scorers,
Eliza Martinez had a career-high eight points and six rebounds.
Arin Perry had a personal-best seven assists.
Astrea Reed added eight points and, in her first game since Dec. 18,
Cheyenne Hedrington had seven points.
The Lopes scored the first 12 points of the second half, quickly extending their 13-point halftime lead to 25.
GCU led by 13 at the intermission, and by as much as 14 during the first 20 minutes. Ten different players scored and had rebounds. The Lopes defense held the Hawks to just 27.6 percent shooting (8-of-29) and outrebounded the visitors 23-16. Gajewski had three treys and nine first-half points. Perry had three first-half assists, including two on fastbreaks that highlighted a 9-0 run that saw GCU extend its lead from 8-6 to 17-6.
