The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (9-8) opens conference play today, Jan. 10, when Bakersfield (4-11) makes a visit to GCU Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. KAZT7 will carry the television broadcast, which can also be found via online stream on www.cox7.com, beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on radio on KXXT 1010 AM (also via the KXXT "TuneIn Radio" App), with GCU Alum Michael Potter calling the action alongside 'The Coach", Dan Nichols.VS. BAKERSFIELDThis marks the 32nd meeting between GCU and Bakersfield, with the Roadrunners holding the 19-12 lead in the all-time series. The Lopes swept CSUB in their two meetings last season. Before meeting last season as members of the WAC, the teams had last faced off on Dec. 13, 2005, a 77-74 CSUB win when both schools were members of the CCAA.

LAST TIME OUTGCU picked up a win in their final non-conference game of the season, downing UC Riverside 71-69 on Jan. 4 at GCU Arena. The Lopes led by as many as 13 in the second half before the Highlanders came as close as two points with 11 seconds to play. DeWayne Russell led the team with 19 points, while Royce Woolridge had 18 and Joshua Braun added 15.
BRAUN STEPPING UPGCU redshirt freshman Joshua Braun has scored in double figures eight times already this season, including six of his last seven games. He scored a career-best 22 points on Dec. 17 against Incarnate Word, playing a season-high 39 minutes in that same game. Braun helped guide GCU to an impressive 68-65 win over New Mexico on Dec. 23 with a team-high 18 points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds on Dec. 28 vs. Abilene Christian. He was tabbed as the Western Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 15-21 after averaging 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as the Lopes went 2-1 on the week.
RUSSELL SHINING EARLYDeWayne Russell is averaging 15.5 points in eight games since making his GCU debut on Dec. 13 at Indiana. He scored a GCU-best 20 points on Dec. 17 versus Incarnate Word and has scored in double figures in each of his eight games. He recorded a similar 12-game stretch as a freshman at Northern Arizona. Russell is shooting nearly 48.0 percent from the floor so far and is averaging 33.1 minutes per game.
