Grand Canyon picked up where it left off during the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Mount Royal in an exhibition match at GCU Arena Tuesday.
The Antelopes, who went 3-0 with three 3-0 victories in the Texas Southern Invitational last week, will play Mount Royal Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the arena. It is the team's final exhibition match.
"Our fans made this place run tonight," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "It was great to see all the energy and support from our GCU family."
GCU won by set scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-23.
Redshirt-sophomore
Megan Byrnes hit .333 and led GCU hitters with 11 kills. Frosh
Natalie Tardy had eight kills and 11 digs. Off the bench, frosh
Randahl Powers had five kills without an error and hit .385.
"The last two days, (Byrnes) did some early work to be more of an option on offense," said Naber. "She was an offensive threat tonight that we didn't have over the weekend."
GCU had to battle back to earn the sweep. In the third, the Antelopes were down 9-4 early. They took a 24-20 lead, but the Cougars survived three match points. A Byrnes-
Hannah Hankins block ended the contest. Hankins had seven block assists.
"I like that we came out with a win, but I didn't like how we let them take control in the third set and had a hard time closing it out," said Naber. "We're winning, but we want to finish better. That's something that we will want to do better Wednesday. Overall, it was a positive night."
Naber was happy with the play of many of her youngsters, noting the team, at one time, had four freshmen and two sophomores on the floor. "They performed well together," added Naber.
GCU hit .235 for the match, including a match-best .306 in the second. Setter
Leigh Stonerook had 29 assists and eight digs. Libero
Mackenzie Phelps had nine digs. Mount Royal hit just .089. The Antelopes won the block battle 8-6 and had more digs, 47-45. There were 16 ties and seven lead changes.
