Grand Canyon University head women's soccer coach Stevie Gill has added transfer Maria Monterroso to the 2014 roster. Monterroso, who is a member of the Guatemalan National Team, previously starred at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark.
"Maria is an excellent player who has played numerous games for her country at the World Cup team level," said Gill. "She will anchor our forward line and add an element of composure and experience. Not only can she score goals, but she has the vision and passing acumen to lay on goals for others."
The forward brings a wealth of experience to the Antelope lineup, as Monterroso was named Freshman of the Year in the American Midwest Conference after striking for 20 goals in her inaugural collegiate campaign. In addition, she was also placed on the American Midwest Conference First Team for her efforts during the Scots' 2012 season.
"We are excited to have Maria as a part of our GCU family as we know that she will fit in well both on and off the field of play," added Gill.
Monterroso helped the Guatemalan National Team to a third-place finish at the World Cup Qualifiers in Costa Rica in 2013.
