In the day's first game, the Lopes combined for their 17
th double-digit hit and seventh double-digit run game, but they fell in their 12
th one-run game (4-8) of the season in the day's second contest.
GCU starters
Andrew Naderer and
Ethan Evanko combined to allow just three runs, only two of which were earned, over 13.2 innings of work.
"We had good at-bats and stayed within ourselves in that first game," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "Andrew threw great. He did a great job of throwing strikes and allowing us to play defense. But unfortunately, the second game was basically the opposite. We were trying to do too much and our swings were too big. We gave away too many at-bats early. Little things like not getting a bunt down add up after a while in a close game, but I thought we did a good job of putting guys in scoring position. On a bright spot, Ethan threw well again. He has done a great job of minimizing when he has to."
A number of Lopes kept their respective hitting streaks alive in today's doubleheader:
Chad De La Guerra (13),
David Walker (9), and
Michael Pomeroy (8).
Pomeroy collected four hits between the two games, while De La Guerra was just behind with three hits.
Game one starter Naderer allowed just two runs over 7.2 innings of work to improve to 7-3 on the season. He issued two walks and struck out four. It was the sixth time this season that Naderer has allowed three or fewer runs while tossing at least 7.0 innings.
De La Guerra, Pomeroy,
Paul Panaccione, and
Brandon Smith each had two hits in the first game, while De La Guerra recorded three RBI.
Josh Meyer added two RBI for the Lopes.
The Redhawks loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first, aided by two GCU errors, but Naderer retired the next three batters to allow just one Seattle run to come across.
Ben Mauseth quickly knotted the score at two in the following frame with an RBI double down the right field line to plate Pomeroy, who led off the inning with a single up the middle. The Lopes returned the favor of loading the bases and
Jon Kealoha handed GCU their first lead with a walk. De La Guerra promptly followed with a single up the middle to put the Lopes ahead 4-1 and record his ninth straight multi-hit effort.
Seattle got a run back in the bottom of the second on a two-out triple to left-centerfield.
GCU's scoring continued in the top of the third after
Matt Haggerty reached with his 11
th hit by pitch and came around to score on a single to right field by Panaccione. One batter later, Mauseth crossed home on a single up the middle by Smith, who represented the third run of the frame that followed a Walker single and error by the Redhawks third baseman.
Naderer got out of another bases loaded jam in the third inning to hold GCU's five-run advantage.
Meyer placed a 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to extend GCU's lead to 9-2 with nobody out in the fourth. After the teams exchanged zeroes for the next three innings, the Lopes scored their 10
th run of the game on a bases loaded hit by pitch for De La Guerra, his third RBI of the contest. Two more runs came across in the frame as GCU staked a 10-run advantage at 12-2.
In the second game, Evanko allowed a run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings, the eighth time that he has tossed at least 6.0 innings and allowed two or fewer runs.
Malcolm Purdy was tagged with the loss (4-4) after surrendering the game-winner in the eighth.
Similar to the first game, the Redhawks got on the board first in the day's second contest with a solo home run over the left field fence in the second inning to stake the early 1-0 lead.
With Seattle threatening in the fourth, Kealoha made a great throw from centerfield to get a runner attempting to score and keep the Redhawks within one run. Seattle threatened again in the seventh after both teams traded zeroes, this time with back-to-back two-out singles. However, Purdy induced a groundout to end the frame.
In the top of the eighth, the Lopes had runners on second and third with two outs after Panaccione reached via an error and was followed by a walk to Walker, both of which also stole a base. After pinch-hitter Meyer drew a walk, catcher's interference in De La Guerra's at-bat knotted the score at one.
The Redhawks used a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the 2-1 lead. A single was followed by a double to deep right field to plate the run before a rundown at third represented the third out of the inning.
"Tomorrow we will come back and get back to our base hit game," added Stankiewicz.
