The Grand Canyon University baseball team (30-21, 19-8 WAC) wrapped up Western Athletic Conference play by securing their eighth series victory in nine tries after taking two of three games from Utah Valley over the weekend. The Lopes won the series opener behind a strong pitching performance from Andrew Naderer, who improved to 9-3 on the season. Chad De La Guerra hit two 3-run home runs over the final two games of the series as he extended his streak of reaching base safely to 28 straight games.
WHERE WE STACK IN THE WACGCU was picked to finish fifth in the 10-team Western Athletic Conference, while Bakersfield, who won a share of the WAC regular season title in 2013, was chosen as the preseason favorite. Sacramento State, who was picked to finish third, clinched the regular season title with a 21-6 mark, just 2.0 games ahead of the Lopes who finished second with a 19-8 WAC record. GCU won eight of nine conference series, including their final six.
BATTING CHAMP!Chad De La Guerra finished atop the conference standings in batting average in WAC play, hitting at a .390 clip in 27 league games. He also led the WAC with 29 runs scored and finished third with a .590 slugging percentage.
FLAIR FOR THE DRAMATICSGCU has played in 13 one-run games so far this season (4-9), including six straight from April 1-12. The Lopes have participated in 20 games decided by two runs or less.
SLAPPING HANDS ON SUNDAYThe Antelopes are 12-0 in games played on Sunday, outscoring the opposition 104-36 in those contests. Seven of those wins secured series victories for the Lopes. Coley Bruns is 5-0 in Sunday starts, while Ethan Evanko has also picked up five wins.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOMEGCU hit .321 (210-for-655) in 20 home games this season as they are sported a 15-5 record at Brazell Stadium. The Lopes outscored their opposition 141-73 at home. The pitching staff boasted a 3.37 ERA (67 ER in 179.0 IP) while holding opponents to a .255 average.
GOING STREAKINGChad De La Guerra has reached base safely in 28 consecutive games and owns the longest hitting streak for the Lopes at 17 games, doing so from April 11-May 10 (.507, 34-for-67). De La Guerra collected 13 multi-hit affairs during that run. David Walker recently snapped a 10-game hit streak from April 16-May 3 (14-for-40, .350), while Michael Pomeroy had a 13-game streak from April 18-May 11 (25-for-60, .417).
DE LA GUERRA WITH THE BATChad De La Guerra has 14 multi-hit games over his last 18 contests (36-for-72, .500). In 51 games, he has a team-best .368 batting average (74-for-201), 12 doubles, 4 triples, 5 homers, 46 RBI, and 23 multi-hit games. He is also a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen bases this season. At the conclusion of the regular season, he owns the second-best batting average in the conference behind Nathan Lukes (.371) of Sacramento State. De La Guerra was tabbed as WAC Hitter of the Week for April 14-20.
BRUNS GETTING IT DONEColey Bruns is 6-0 in 12 starts (14 appearances) this season for the 'Lopes, allowing just 22 earned runs in 87.0 innings for a 2.28 ERA. He has struck out a team-best 68 batters. Bruns tossed three straight complete games from March 16-30. On May 10 at North Dakota, he did not allow a run in his fourth complete game and first shutout for a GCU pitcher this season.
WALKER'S WAY = GETTING ON BASEDavid Walker leads the team with a .467 on-base percentage and is batting at .365 clip (70-for-192) in 51 games. He has 22 multi-hit games on the season, second only to Chad De La Guerra. Walker drew 4 walks in GCU's series clinching win over Northern Colorado on April 20, a single-game high for the Lopes. Walker was named WAC Hitter of the Week on March 10.
THAT'S A GOOD PROBLEMHumberto Aranda and Josh Meyer have shared the duties behind the plate this season, both making the best of their time. Aranda is batting .301 (34-for-113) in 33 games (27 starts at catcher) with 16 runs, 8 doubles, a triple, 2 home runs, and 22 RBI. Meyer is hitting at a .264 clip (24-for-91) with 9 doubles and 24 RBI in 31 games (23 starts).
POMEROY IS HEATING UPMichael Pomeroy has heated up offensively as of late, collecting 13 multi-hit games since March 18 and batting .395 (45-for-114) in that time. Pomeroy had a season-best 4 hits and 4 RBI in the series finale at Seattle U on May 3 and has 9 multi-hit affairs in his last 15 games. He collected his 200
th career hit in the eighth inning at Washington on May 5.
AS A STAFFGCU's starting pitchers have combined to toss 321.0 innings in 51 starts compared to 275.0 innings for opponents' starters. Andrew Naderer and Coley Bruns lead the staff with 97.1 and 79.2 innings, respectively. 'Lopes starters have collected 198 strikeouts while issuing just 82 walks as opponents are batting .249.
