It hasn't taken long for Grand Canyon to get on the sand volleyball map.
The program's No. 1 team of
Mackenzie Phelps and
Kelli Dallmann will begin competition in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala., Friday.
The Phelps/Dallmann pair was selected by AVCA coaches to be part of the Best of the Rest 10-team pairs pool. A top three finish in pool play can advance them to the 16-team tournament on Sunday. The top two automatically qualify. The No. 3s from each pool playoff for one of the tournament's final spot.
The remainder of the 16-team field will be made up of the top pairs from the program's competing in the team tournament.
Phelps/Dallmann own an 18-4 record in tournament and dual play.
This is only the second year of the GCU sand program.
"I've seen a lot of growth and accomplishments for a second-year program," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "We went from 0-9 and having a few individual wins to 8-5 and sending a pair to the championships.
"We look to build off of this year's success for more success in 2015."
"It's crazy the growth we've seen from our team," said Phelps. "(Last year) no one knew who we were. Now, more people know us, and coaches tell us how much better we are from our first season. That's great to hear because we've trained hard to get here."
GCU's group begins pool play at 9 a.m. (Arizona Time) and will play two matches Friday and two matches Saturday. If needed, the third-place play-in match will also be Saturday.
GCU's pool includes Dagnija Medina-Kim Hildreth, North Florida; Tyler Jackson-Janisa Johnson, Long Beach State; Jordan Shaw-Samantha Tinsley, St. Mary's; and Tea Juric-Jackie Wegner, Tulane.
Phelps and Dallmann won their first four matches of the season and had a 12-match winning streak.
""With only 10 teams, it's exciting to be chosen," said Dallmann, the lone senior on the GCU team. Dallmann played indoor volleyball at Northern Arizona and came to GCU to play in a sand program for her final year of eligibility.
"At the beginning of the season (the post season) wasn't on our mind, but after a while we were still undefeated, we knew there was a chance," said Phelps. "I want us to make a statement for Grand Canyon."
GCU's opening match is against Tulane's Juric-Wegner. Phelps/Dallmann have not played any of the teams in either pool this season.
Saturday's matches begin at 7 a.m. Arizona Time. Sunday's Pairs National Championships start at 6 a.m. Arizona Time.
"They have a great record on the court and they do just as much or more off the court," added Naber on her program's first-ever national tournament pair. "They're great role models. They've worked hard and they've been great leaders for our program."
Updates of match results will be available during the days of competition on the GCU athletics twitter page at @GCU_Lopes.
