For the fifth time in six tries, the Grand Canyon University baseball team (23-18, 12-6 WAC) picked up a Western Athletic Conference series win, this time after a 9-4 victory over visiting New Mexico State (17-22, 8-7 WAC) in the rubber match today at Brazell Stadium.

"I'm proud of the guys, we lost a tough one yesterday but the guys came back ready to play today," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "We took the four runs in the first, but what was good to see was getting those runs in the sixth and seventh innings because that is something we haven't done as well. But we committed to putting the ball in play and putting bunts in the right spot. Hopefully the guys are seeing that you can win games playing that type of baseball."
The Antelopes improved to 13-4 in home games and have yet to drop a series on their home field.
GCU put four runs on the board quickly, but were held scoreless over the next four innings as the Aggies tied the game in the third inning. The Lopes responded by scoring five times over the sixth and seventh innings while not allowing another run to New Mexico State for the remainder of the game.
Chad De La Guerra went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored to extend his hitting streak to a team-best 11 games. He has also now reached base safely in 18 consecutive games.
Michael Pomeroy and
Garrett Jeffries also collected two hits in the game as Pomeroy extended his hitting streak to six games.
David Walker also kept his hit streak alive at seven games with a hit, two runs scored, and RBI. Jeffries added two RBI for the Lopes.
Starter
Ethan Evanko did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over 4.0 innings of work.
Zebastian Valenzuela entered in relief of Evanko and tossed 4.0 solid innings to record his first-career win with GCU.
Scott Serigstad added a scoreless inning of relief to secure the win.
"Ethan didn't pitch as well as he has previously, but he fought through it and he gave us a chance to stay in the game," added Stankiewicz. "We needed that middle guy to come in and Zebastian did a terrific job of battling. And Scott came in there at the end and did great as well. We had three freshmen come in and pitch today and it was good to see how well they did."
GCU loaded the bases with no outs on the board in the first after Aggies starter Robert Kraft issued back-to-back walks and then hit De La Guerra.
Josh Meyer drew a walk to score Walker and give the Lopes the early 1-0 lead. Jeffries hit a two-out single through the right side to plate
Ben Mauseth and De La Guerra, and an error by the first baseman allowed Meyer to cross home with the fourth run of the inning.
New Mexico State got on the board in the third inning with three consecutive hits, including two doubles. The Aggies pushed across three more runs before the frame was over to knot the score at four.
The Lopes broke the tie in the seventh after pushing across three runs, aided by two Aggies errors. GCU then tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh, an inning which saw Pomeroy,
Brian Kraft, and
Brandon Smith each single, while Smith and
Chris Lindmark picked up an RBI.
"We will take the two wins and hopefully gain some confidence as we hit the road to Seattle," Stankiewicz said.
GCU will now hit the road for seven straight away from Brazell Stadium, beginning with a three-game set at Seattle U. That series gets underway on Friday with game time slated for 6 p.m. Fans can follow all of the action live by tuning in to Independent Talk 1100 AM KFNX (online at
