After recording a pair of 8-3 wins over Utah Valley (12-26, 4-5 WAC) on Friday in Orem, Utah, the Grand Canyon University (22-17, 7-2 WAC) softball team answered with a 14-4 six-inning run-rule victory over the host Wolverines on Saturday to pick up the weekend series sweep. With the three wins, the Antelopes take over sole possession of second place in the Western Athletic Conference behind New Mexico State, who will come to Phoenix next weekend for a three-game series.
"I was very pleased with the sweep against a very good Utah Valley team," said head coach Ann Pierson. "We hit the ball hard all day and our defense was solid as well."
With neither team being able to muster together any offense through the first three innings Saturday, Grand Canyon was able to break the ice in the top of the fourth, tacking two runs on the scoreboard to give the Lopes a 2-0 lead. GCU got back-to-back singles from
Nicole Newbury and
Camree Wartman to open the frame, putting runners on first and second for
Kailey Regester, who smacked an RBI double to center, scoring Newbury and advancing Wartman to third. Wartman then crossed the plate on a
Claire Zampini sacrifice fly to give Canyon a pair of fourth inning runs.
Utah Valley answered in the home half of the fourth, using a two-run home run and a solo home run to take a 3-2 lead over Grand Canyon.
Canyon pushed across a run in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 3-3. After a Wartman walk and Regester single, relief pitcher
Kiki Sepulveda helped her own cause, connecting on an RBI single to center, plating Wartman and evening the score at 3-3.
The Lopes poured on the runs in the top of the sixth, scoring 11 times in the frame to regain the lead, 14-3. A
Lauren Regester three-run home run highlighted the scoring in the inning for GCU, as the junior blasted her third bomb of the spring. The round-tripper was the second hit of the inning for the first baseman, as she also recorded a bunt single in the inning. Grand Canyon used five hits and capitalized on three Wolverine errors in the inning. In addition to Regester's two hits in the inning, Newbury, Zampini, and
Kelsey Barak all tallied base knocks in the top of the sixth. Utah Valley also walked in three runs in the inning.
Sepulveda picked up her second win of the year in the circle, hurling 2.0 innings of hitless ball in relief of starter
Stephanie Pesqueira.
Newbury finished with three hits at the dish and both Kailey Regester and Lauren Regester collected two hits in the finale. Grand Canyon's 14 runs marked a season-high.
"We have a really big series coming up next weekend with New Mexico State, there is a lot at stake for us," concluded Pierson. "We are excited about being able to be back playing at home next weekend and will have a great week of practice and tighten up a few things in preparation for a big series."
The Lopes will return home to Stapleton-Pierson Stadium next weekend for their final home series of the season. Preseason conference favorite New Mexico State will make the trek west for a three-game league series in Phoenix. The two foes will open the weekend series with a doubleheader on Friday night before concluding the series with a Saturday afternoon matinee.
