Grand Canyon's top pair of
Mackenzie Phelps and
Kelli Dallmann won their ninth straight match and improved to 14-2 on the season, but the Antelopes were unable to get any other victories in a 4-1 loss to No. 6 Florida International in a dual at Siesta Key, Fla., Friday.
Phelps/Dallmann won 21-13, 21-9 over Jessica Gehrke and Marina Boulanger.
It was the second day of a five-day Florida road trip. GCU defeated Florida Gulf Coast Thursday. Saturday and Sunday the pairs will play in tournaments in the Sixth Annual Fiesta on Siesta Key. Grand Canyon's Phelps/Dallmann and No. 2 team of
Shannon Dugan and
Megan Glennie will play against other No. 1s and No. 2s. The remaining GCU pairs will play in the Fiesta Team Cup.
To wrap up the trip, GCU will play a dual Monday against Webber International in Babson Park, Fla.
"FIU is a great program and has some very good players," said coach Kris Naber. "We were battling opponents and playing conditions and hopefully we'll learn from today and adjust for tomorrow."
