Grand Canyon's second season of sand volleyball ended with a 3-2 dual win over Boise State at the GCU sand volleyball courts Friday.
After a winless inaugural season in 2013, GCU went 8-5 and will have its No. 1 pair,
Mackenzie Phelps and
Kelli Dallmann competed next weekend in the AVCA National Pairs Tournament.
"There were so many accomplishments this season," said GCU coach Kris Naber. "We turned things around from last year. The girls came into the season with the mentality of getting better. To come out 8-5 is pretty special."
Tied 1-1 after the completion of the No. 4 and No. 5 matches, GCU dominated at No. 1 and No. 2 securing the team win.
"I thought everyone was consistent today," said Naber. "We came out like we wanted and all six groups won the first set. In our two losses, it went to three and we battled to the end."
Phelps/Dallmann improved to 18-4 in dual and tournament play with a straight set win. At No. 2,
Shannon Dugan and
Megan Glennie were quick two-set winners.
Brooke Razo and
Kaylee Dombroski won in three sets, at No. 4. It took extra points to win the third, 20-18.
Boise State dropped to 4-4 with the loss.
