After being on the road for the past month, the Grand Canyon University softball team returns to the confines of Stapleton-Pierson Stadium Friday for its first-ever Western Athletic Conference (WAC) series. The Antelopes will welcome Kansas City for both teams' conference opener. The Kangaroos, also a first-year WAC member, enter with a record of 10-23, after previously competing within The Summit League for the previous 19 years.
The 'Lopes come into the weekend with a 15-15 record and winners of their last three. The two teams will begin action on Friday evening in Phoenix with a twin bill slated to start at 5 p.m., followed by game two. The two foes will conclude the conference opening series with a midday tilt on Saturday, as first pitch in the series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
On Saturday, the lady 'Lopes will promote breast cancer awareness and fans are encouraged to wear pink and enjoy the numerous giveaways that will be happening. The American Cancer Society will also be present, handing out bracelets to fans in attendance. Last October, the softball athletes and coaches participated in the 21st Annual Susan G. Komen Foundation Phoenix Race for the Cure. According to the Foundation's website, the event raised nearly $1.2 million.
GCU most recently took part in the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin last weekend, chalking up a 4-1 record after defeating both Princeton and tournament host, Santa Clara, twice during the three-day stretch in Santa Clara, Calif. In Saturday's first game against Santa Clara, every Antelope that played tallied at least one hit, leading Grand Canyon to a WAC season-best 17 hits.

Kayla Henry,
Stephanie Pesqueira and
Kylie Shull tallied two hits apiece. Freshman
Taylor Nowlin threw a two-hit gem in Canyon's five-inning run-rule rout over Princeton in game two on Saturday and was crowned as the WAC Pitcher of the Week for her efforts. The first RPI poll of the season was released on Monday with Grand Canyon ranked 121
st of 293 teams in Division I.
Kansas City is 10-23 on the season after dropping three games earlier in the week in California. They are led at the plate by Bri Wyatt, who has accumulated a .345 batting average and Katie Kelley has picked up a team-high five wins in the circle. The 'Roos finished last season 18-27.
